Illustrator of children's books The Kissing Hand and Sassafras, award-winning artist Ruth Harper paints nature with beautiful details and intensified color.

She loves to 'weave' calligraphy into many of her paintings as a way of appealing to both logic and visual senses. She wants each one to have deep meaning to the viewer.

Ruth has a graphic arts background and is a self-taught painter (unless you count all the television painting shows!) whose love for children led to many rewarding years of teaching art. She has taught both adults and children in school and community art programs since. 

She loves to visit elementary schools to explain how books are made and draw or paint for children, while encouraging each to pursue their talents - whatever they are. 

Ruth would like to create you your own special painting, too. Choose one of her images then pick a verse that is meaningful to you (or loved one) - and she will 'paint' the verse in colored calligraphy. Each is a unique original.
